wood carving
It was appropriate that some parts of the model were created by hand. Not all jobs are easiest relying on computers and machinery. We decided that we could hand carve the spikes.
For this job I measured out the dimensions and created an acurate spike. Subsequently I relyed on careful observation of the photo to re-create the curves. The sanding process was incremental with constant reference to the photo.
This was a new technique for me and I learnt that the best results come from patience and constant reference to the image, in a similar way to drawing by hand.

The wood I used was jelutong. This was an ideal material choice for this task because despite being a hard wodd it is light and easiy to work with. It also has straight and less prominant grain which makes it uniformly responsive to sanding and carving. This was important because I was making a piece that required rotational symmetry.
